🌻🍯🐝💛Fluffy ‘’Mekitsi’’ (Bulgarian Fried Dough)
🛒 Ingredients:
-
500 g flour
-
1 packet dry yeast (or 20 g fresh yeast)
-
250 ml warm milk (or water)
-
1 teaspoon sugar
-
1 teaspoon salt
-
1 egg
-
2 tablespoons oil or melted butter
-
Oil for frying
-
Feta cheese & jar of Bees & Berry (your preferred flavor)
🥣 Instructions:
-
If using fresh yeast, dissolve it in a little warm milk with a teaspoon of sugar and let it foam (about 10 minutes). If using dry yeast, just mix it with the flour.
-
Sift the flour into a large bowl and make a well in the middle.
-
Add the yeast (or dry yeast), egg, the rest of the milk, sugar, salt, and oil.
-
Knead a soft and sticky dough. Add a little flour if needed, but don’t add too much — the dough should stay soft.
-
Cover the dough with a cloth and leave it to rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, until it doubles in size.
-
Heat oil in a deep pan or fryer.
-
Take portions of the dough with a spoon or your hands and shape mekitsi. Fry them in the hot oil until golden brown on both sides (about 2-3 minutes per side).
-
Remove and place on paper towels to drain excess oil.
-
Serve with a slice of feta cheese and your preferred Bees & Berry Classic or Creamed Honey flavor. Add some jam of your choice for an extra sweet twist.
Tip: Mekitsi are best served warm.
